Open source Drupal development at Acro Media: The stats

September 6, 2018, marked the release of Drupal 8.6.0. Soon after, Dries Buytaert, founder and project lead of the Drupal open source platform, wrote a lengthy blog post titled Who sponsors Drupal Development? (2017-2018 edition). In this post, Dries examined the commit data on, Drupal’s collaboration community, to understand the development ecosystem. It’s an interesting read and really shows how active and engaged the community is.

We pride ourselves on being a major Drupal contribution sponsor as a company. We’re one of a handful of companies that were called out by name as being among the leaders of Drupal development. It feels good to have recognition from our peers and we thought we’d post some of the exciting stats, not to brag but because we’re proud of the work that we do.

The numbers

When an issue posted to a project on is resolved, the maintainer of the project gives out “credits” to the member or members that contributed to the resolution. In total, the data captured on represents 49,793 issue credits given across 24,447 issues. The timeline for this data is between July 1, 2017, and June 30, 2018.

Of the 24,447 issues resolved, code contributions came from 7,287 individuals. 1002 organizations were the sponsors behind many of those contributions. That’s a lot of people and organizations involved! When we talk about the robust and secure Drupal ecosystem, these are the numbers of people and organizations making that happen.

Top individual contributors

Within the list of top individual contributors, Acro Media was a sponsor of 3 of the top 30!

We also provided minor sponsorship (a total of 8 credits) to bojanz (#5) and mglaman (#8).

Top contributing organizations

Within the list of top contributing organizations, Acro Media was near the top at #4. We were direct sponsors of 733 commit credits that were issued to members of our staff and outside contractors. Actually, there’s a chance that we could be #3 except that heddn is a contractor and runs under his own banner, so we don’t see his numbers reflected in our organization total.

Top sponsored projects

Within the list of top projects where sponsored individuals gained commit credits, Acro Media was involved in 4 of the top 20 projects.

As you can see, our sponsorship focus is almost exclusively commerce-related (omnichannel, baby!). However, we do have a large hand in migration. As far as the migration path from Drupal 6 and 7 to Drupal 8 goes, we’re the primary force sponsoring that initiative. Drupal is our platform of choice for ecommerce and not only do we want to build great ecommerce websites, but we also want to make the tools available for others to easily move to the platform for its benefits. We have an article outlining many of the advantages of open source ecommerce which you can read here if you like.

Great job, everyone!

While this blog outlines some successes we’re having as a Drupal agency alongside our staff, contractors and partners, it’s important to understand that Drupal is a collaboration of many people and organizations around the globe. We encourage you to read the full post for some great insight into the Drupal community at large.
